For many of us sleeping is a phase of ‘Relaxation’. Of course, it is a state of relaxation because we enter a different state of consciousness i.e either dreaming or deep sleep and we are unaware about the present conscious state. But the emotions, cravings, sanskaras & our thoughts travel along. How can it be a phase of relaxation when we are still carrying the same burden of thoughts that appear to us in dreams? Sleeping might be relaxing for the body because our body is in a paralyzed state when we are sleeping. There is no body movement and no extra signal is passing to the brain. Parasympathetic system is active, activity of the brain's fluid is slowing down and less messages are received by the brain from the outer world. But the inner system of our brain is still working , creating random images, symbols and stories on the basis of our thoughts & emotions.
In Yoga, sleeping is the phase of relaxation not only for the body but also for the mind. It's not a transition from waking to dreaming like general sleep but the state in the middle of waking & dreaming. Yogic sleep is the state of dynamic sleep, a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental & emotional relaxation. Yogic sleep is a completely different kind of meditation that’s final goal is to achieve samadhi like all other yoga practices, yet it’s initial stages are found to be helpful in many cases like in treating health disorders, sleeping issues, concentration & more.
I have always had keen interest to learn about the different states of consciousness, how the brain works in these states and how our thoughts & emotions are directly connected to our body & its health. Yogic sleep is one of my long time studied and researched topics. So I am here providing you with all these learnings in a very simple language.
